Surrendering personal control to automation: Appalling or appealing?

There has been a growing interest in Autonomous Vehicle (AV) technology worldwide over the last decade. Nevertheless, various studies have noted some potential socio-psychological challenges to AV use and ownership. These can be mitigated by designing that accounts for users’ personalities, such as their perceived control power. The complex relationship between personal automation, two concepts intuitively sound contradictory each other, is less explored. In this study, dimensions of control, desire driver locus were hypothesized influence attitude toward AV. relationships moderated power distance, cultural factor related one’s sense control. hypotheses tested using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) approach via Analysis Moment Structures (AMOS) software. As many 457 respondents from sample groups, Hungarian Indonesian drivers gathered an online questionnaire compared. results reveal 1) higher more negative 2) external positive 3) AV, intention 4) distance moderates effect strengthened high orientation. This study also provides theoretical contributions managerial implications, especially designers.
